How did you get started in the hair industry, Michael?

It all began in 1988 when a friend sold me some hair clippers at the age of 15. I was fascinated by the art of hairstyling, especially the iconic flat top look. Cutting hair at school turned into a passion, leading me to pursue an apprenticeship at a local salon. From there, I discovered my knack for creating flawless flat tops and delved into a career that evolved from a job into a genuine art form.

Your journey seems quite unique. When did you realise the impact hairstyling could have on people's lives?

Around the age of 19, I teamed up with Gary Spencer, who showed me that hairstyling wasn't just a job; it was a career with cultural significance.

The ability to shape people's self-perception, boost confidence, and make a lasting impact became clear. It's not just a game; it's an important aspect of people's lives, and I've always treated it with great respect.

Moving forward, how did mdlondon and your line of products come into play?

Fast forward to the lockdown when I went live every day to help people with their hair dilemmas. I realised there was a gap in the market for affordable tools and education. Most people sought solutions for more body, shine, and frizz-free hair. I understood it wasn't about products but techniques.

This realisation inspired me to create a line of tools that blend affordability with quality and empower users with proper techniques through education.

How does mdlondon's approach differ from other brands, especially those like Dyson?

Dyson and similar brands entered the beauty industry from a different background, and I felt they lacked the intimate knowledge of hairstyling. MD London focuses on delivering high-quality tools that incorporate expert knowledge and affordability.

Our hairdryer, for example, boasts a lightweight design, reduced noise, and powerful performance—all while maintaining affordability. It's about providing accessible tools without compromising on results.

Tell us more about your latest products and the upcoming releases.

We've recently launched the blush straightener to complement our blush dryer. Additionally, in the New Year, we'll be introducing fantastic brushes, including a radial brush and a vent brush. These brushes, when combined with our dryer, offer incredible results, delivering smoothness, volume, and body to users' hair.

Any quick tips for our readers to achieve a salon-quality blowout at home?

Absolutely! Use a smaller brush at the roots for more volume, contrary to the common belief that bigger brushes provide more volume.

Also, for those with naturally curly hair, avoid combing the hair after towel-drying to reduce frizz. Let the curls clump together naturally, and you'll be amazed at the defined curls without the need for extra products.
